Place value is the understanding that a digit can have a different value depending on its position (or its ‘place’). It is an essential concept for children to understand as it is the basis of our entire number system, and crucial in using the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) as they progress through school learning about ones (or units) and tens, to much higher numbers and decimals.
